*****THIS IS NOT A SPOILER FREE REVIEW!!! IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON READING THIS - STOP NOW!******

I got this for free, when notified about it on Facebook. Being a fan of various genres, I thought I'd give it a shot. Much like watching any Saturday night movie on the SciFi channel, it's about four hours of my life, I'll never get back. The zombies, aren't, since they can run, talk and basically think. They can be shot to pieces, including head shots, and not go down. Add this to the somewhat thin characters and very basic action scenes, as well as the reason the zombies are created (original, but kind of silly) as well as the plodding plot, and this is just not a well done book. If this was the first draft, I could understand the problems (especially with ranks in the military, hey, hit Wikipedia, there's a whole list), but that's just careless, sloppy background work. If you're looking for a great zombie novel, grab Philip Nutman's WetWorks (no, I'm not the author, but I have read it several times) as well as others that are more worth your time and money.

The Zombie Chronicles (Apocalypse Infection Unleashed Series) (Kindle Edition)
By Chrissy Peebles

If you have a thing for zombie books, if you loved the movie "Zombieland" or the TV series "The Walking Dead" than you will be mad about "The Zombie Chronicles (Apocalypse Infection Unleashed Series)" by Chrissy Peebles.

The first chapter starts the action with Dean and his date riding a Ferris wheel when zombies storm the fair. Fast forward to a year in time where people are trying to survive. Dean, along with his brother is trying to save Val, the sister they knew nothing about. Dean has an experimental cure for her but the catch is he has to wait for her to turn before administrating said cure, but in the new world of `Zombie land' once someone has been infected then they are put to death before they have a chance to turn and infect others. Right before Val is slated to be executed Dean sneaks her out of the quarantined, top-security detention center to await her turning. Along the way they rescue a couple of girls, fight off numerous zombie attacks and just try to survive long enough to administer the cure that could save their sister.

Chrissy Peebles has outdone herself again with "The Zombie Chronicles (Apocalypse Infection Unleashed Series)". With this third series she has shown that she is a truly gifted, multitalented novelist. If this is the first book that you have read by Ms. Peebles than do yourself a favor, get back to the Amazon website and get yourself a copy of all of her books. Every one of the books in each of her series are different but highly entertaining and once you start one of her books you will not want to stop reading until that last page is turned. I started this book in the morning and before it was bedtime (to my disappointment) I had finished it. It was that difficult to put down. This is one author that will surely become a favorite of yours.

My ONLY complaint is that I read this in one day and now I have to wait for the next one...uhg. Once again, DJ takes us on a journey of hope, failure, frustration, endurance, determination and the incredible human spirit. DJ takes the time to build characters and get us emotionally involved. The ending left me pacing back and forth in my living room...facing the fact that I will have to wait for the next book. I can get these for free as a Prime Member but I choose to pay, that is how good these are. If you read any negative reviews, ignore them, they are idiots looking for a reason to complain. They would be the infected in the books. Once again, this would be an absolute home rum as a mini series or show on an edgy network (not the lame 3).

UPDATE-D.J. Seriously....can you please get the next one out????? Come on!!!!!

By Kirk Allmond

Having read the first in the series What Zombies Fear, I had to have the Maxists. It did not disappoint. The story continues and keeps up the intrigue. New characters show up; both good and bad. I plan to keep following this one until the end; which I hope is a long time from now. The story is too good to end soon. I recommend this book as much as the first one!

Review: The Thing

The Thing

The Thing (2011) (Amazon Instant Video)
By Mary Elizabeth Winstead

John Carpenter's "The Thing" wasn't so much a remake as a reinterpretation of John Campbell's classic short story. Closer in spirit to Campbell's conception of the Thing, Carpenter's film was both critically lauded because of the suspenseful storytelling and critically attacked for the excessive gore. While the gore is at times quite excessive it fits in with the audience expectations after films like "Dawn of the Dead" (the origianl 1979 movie)and other films of the era.

What's amazing is how audiences are drawn into the story despite the fact that there are no characters we really, really like. We admire many of these men and their resolve but we don't like them. They're the product of their harsh environment and isolation. Mac (Kurt Rusell)is the helicopter pilot for an Antarctic science station. Their dull routine is interrupted by a team of seemingly crazy Norwegians pursuing a dog. The Norwegians are killed and the Americans are left without any idea as to what might have driven the Norwegians over the edge.

Blair (Wilford Brimley)pours over the Norwegian journal brought back by Mac and Cooper (Richard Dysart)and discovers that the Norewegian team discovered an alien spacecraft with an occupant that was very much alive. More importantly, it can change into any shape and take over anybody. Mac, Childs (Keith David) and the rest of the crew must destroy the alien before it can spread to the rest of the civilized world.

Previously released as a "Special Edition" in 1998, "The Thing" has been remastered for this edition. The anamorphic widescreen presentation is, I believe, the first time this has been transferred in the anamorphic format.

Hollowland (The Hollows, #1) (Kindle Edition)
By Amanda Hocking

Remy, the 19 year old protagonist is facing `the end of times'; a post-apocalyptic world where a rabies type virus has turned the majority of the population into zombies. Zombies that roam with an insatiable hunger and are particularly fond of human flesh; one bite, one splash of zombie blood or saliva in an open wound and you become infected. That is if you survive.

Remy and her 8 year old brother Max were brought to a government run quarantine by a group of soldiers who saved them during a zombie raid; Max was sick and stayed on a different floor in the medical wing. Beck, a soldier that took an interest in Remy and Max; taught her how to fight the zombies, not just with guns but with whatever was available, that along with her guts and instinct was a gift that saved her and others countless times.

Zombies overtake the quarantine, yet in all the fright, terror and pandemonium Remy manages to escape bringing along Harlow, an endearing 13 year old who refuses to stay. Amidst the chaos she finds out that only her brother Max and select government doctors and scientists were evacuated to a quarantine 'near' this one. Off into the Zombie filled wasteland they go. They'll soon find out that zombies aren't the only thing to fear.

During their travels they meet Blue, a medical intern with good insight and judgment, Lazlo, a famous recording artist who is a bit eccentric, anxious and easy on the eyes and my personal favorite; Ripley, a zombie killing lion who rocks! They make a sort of unspoken team together set out to find the quarantine, each for their own reasons. Along the way they face, among other terrifing ordeals crazy cults, Mad Max crazy wanna-be's and other 'humans' can be just as vicious as the zombies.

Silence of Souls (The Zombie Apocalypse Saga) (Kindle Edition)
By S. M. Oberhansley

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book because I loved parts of it and hated other parts. Then I realized the parts I hated had nothing to do with the writing or the story, and had everything to do with the emotional investment I had in some of the characters. This is not your typical zombie story and if you are looking for square jawed heroes and a "Band of Brothers" attitude among the survivors, read something else. Our survivors here are pretty much cowardly, selfish and irrational, and seemed to have survived only due to luck, not any particular skill. In other words, real people.

With Julia, our viewpoint character, we have a mother who seems only concerned with finding her family and is willing to sacrifice anyone to find them. She is, however, just as reluctant to face danger as the rest, and is about as resolute as a wet noodle at times. Her hesitation, her self doubts and her annoying habit of freezing up in the face of advancing zombies makes her a liability at first, but she eventually adapts and hardens up. More than any other book I have read, this story deals with the emotional wreckage created by the sight of loved ones devoured in front of their families, and pulls few emotional punches. Also, not recommended for any readers with a weak stomach, as the gore is knee deep and you can practically smell it from the author's descriptions.

SPOILER ALERT: No Hollywood endings here, and brace yourselves for the last twenty pages. I look forward to reading more from this talented and seriously disturbed author. Sorry, I meant author of disturbing ideas.

Great book! I hate it when something is 9.99 (or more) and end up disappointed in the product. Sometimes the lesser priced ones are not long enough or just are not any good. Not the case here at all - a fair price and just as good, or much better, than the higher ticket books in this genre. It's a tight, well woven story and gets creepy immediately as it begins in a apparently deserted psych ward, with the main character waking up to....all the goodies that implies. Characters have depth but aren't over the top, with tons of combat/action sequences and post apocalyptic horrors. Love it!

When I read that the fridge was dark because the power was out, and the character walks into the living room and turns on the TV, which powers on, it made me cringe. This type of thing happens more than once.

I've greatly enjoyed reading 'Pit Bulls Vs. Zombies'. I confess that I am a fan of pit bulls and I like reading books
where these magnificent animals are portrayed in a positive light.

This interesting and compact take on zombie genre does not disappoint. The story has everything: an island in a grip of deadly epidemic that turns living things into ruthless killing machines, a desperate fight for survival, a vaccine that makes pit bulls talk (my personal favorite), a slow government response and more. Ends on a cliffhanger though, I sincerely hope that Mr. Katz is already working on a sequel.

Highly recommended.
